November Presidency Message

Most of us just enjoyed a bountiful Thanksgiving feast, and we numbered the many blessings that we have received from a loving Heavenly Father! This month, as we celebrate the birth of the Savior, we have the opportunity to partake of a SPIRITUAL FEAST, by increasing our effort to draw nearer to Him. As we contemplate His miraculous birth, His perfect life, and the reality of His atoning sacrifice and glorious resurrection, let us strive to center our lives in Him - through fasting and prayer, studying and pondering

His teachings, and through following His supreme example of unselfish service. It is our hope that amid the hustle and bustle of the season, that each of you will find a quiet moment to feel His love for you, and

to express your love to Him. May our hearts be filled with gratitude and joy as we celebrate His life this Christmas season! “O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!”

Merry Christmas!

October Presidency Message

Hello Sisters! We want to tell you how much we love you, appreciate you, and enjoy you! We hope that you realize how wonderful and special you are - both as a group and individually. True self esteem comes from being aware of who we really are. Too often, we allow the world to define what we "should" be, until it becomes difficult to tell our real self from our "worldly self." Satan would have us accept this distorted image as the "real us." He would have us measure our worth in terms of what we look like, what we have and the things that we can do. He wants us to feel WORTHLESS - in effect, to forget who we really are! Our worth is NOT determined by what size dress we wear, if our clothing is in style, how clean our houses are, or how far we can run - THANK GOODNESS! Keeping in mind the following three things can help us be mindful of our divine nature and individual worth: (1) REMEMBER YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO GODRemembering who we are helps us to remember what things in life matter most. It helps us see the divine purpose in our lives, and it provides clarity and direction. The Relief Society Declaration begins, "We are beloved spirit daughters of God." We can strengthen this knowledge by making spiritual growth a priority. (2) DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD. Our self confidence is tied to our confidence in the Lord. We must have the Lord's help in our lives and must trust in the power of the atonement to lift us. Through the atonement, the Savior can perfect us. We cannot perfect ourselves. He loves us and he can make weak things strong. We need to know that if we TRY and put forth a sincere effort, He will make up the difference. We develop confidence in the Lord in the same way that we remember our relationship to God: by making spiritual growth a priority. (3) PRACTICE PATIENCE WITH YOURSELF. Stop the negative self talk! Our Father in Heaven has infinite love for us, despite our faults. When we remember this, it becomes easier to love ourselves, and in turn to love others more freely. Amulek counseled his people to, ". . .let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you." Alma 34:27. Shift your thoughts from the negative, and direct them prayerfully toward Heavenly Father, asking for help and sharing your struggles, fears, and your joys and gratitude. Letting your heart be drawn out in prayer will help your thoughts become more meaningful and can bring great peace and enlightenment. You truly have come to this earth "trailing clouds of glory. . .From God, who is our home." Let us all remember who we REALLY are, and draw comfort and strength from that knowledge! Love always, 8th Ward Relief Society Presidency

Sisters, As General Conference approaches, it is a good idea to prepare for the words we are about to hear. Some great ideas to do before and during conference were shared by a sister on her blog spirituallythinking.blogspot.com. Click HERE for the full post.

- Use it as the time to go through Food storage/ Emergency kits to replace old items, rotate winter items for summer ones, replace batteries in smoke detectors etc.

- Prepare games for kids. If you go to www.lds.org, there are activities and computer games for kids. At www.sugardoodle.net you can find ones for all ages from nursery to youth.

- Learn about the Apostles prior to Conference: "Something we do every year is get to know the first presidency and 12 apostles. For several weeks before General Conference we review each man and learn something about him. This year I wanted to make it a little more interactive so out of the 5 we talked about that night we would do something that one of them liked to do. So the first week we made banana bread together... because Pres. Eyring likes to bake with his family. The next week we watercolored because Elder Scott likes to paint. And this week we went outside to play football since Elders Holland and Cook played (and Elder Bednar met his wife playing flag football). I think it made it a little more memorable for my boys. I am going to be posting this idea on my blog soon and I'll try to word it more clearly!"

- Have another family or some friends over for Pot luck in between sessions or after a session. We do this most years and it's always such great experience.

- DVR/TIVO Conference so you can use for FHE's during next 6 months.

-Another suggestion I read: "We do 'conference candy' I put out a candy dish and each session my husband and I pick a word and when you hear the word you can help yourself to a piece of candy (got the idea a few years ago in the Ensign and it works GREAT!!")

-I heard of a really neat tradition someone had. In their family they talk about King Benjamin's address and how everyone came and put up their tents up and listened to his message. Then the parents set up a tent in front of the TV with a mattress inside it and they have fun yummy treats and listened listen carefully to conference.

- Make a list of specific questions or issues you're working on and would like help with.

- Fast about a specific topic before Conference Pray, to feel the Spirit, about one or all of the things on your list, for the speakers Learn about the General Authorities' lives, families, etc.

- Have a Family Home Evening about General Conference (how to act during, what happens, who speaks, etc.)

- Read your Patriarchal Blessing if you have it.

- Get plenty of sleep the night before.

 - Do all your cleaning and chores before Conference if you can

- Plan to discuss the talks after you watch Conference. This helps you pay attention because you know you'll have to have something interesting to say about it later.

- Plan to listen for which talk to focus on for your Visiting/Home Teaching lesson Plan and shop for meals the day before.

- Have a Conference food tradition.

- Find your journal or whatever you take notes in. Find a pen, too.

August Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,We are very blessed to be part of this glorious gospel. We have a loving Heavenly Father who loves us, and is mindful of our struggles and our joys. His desire is to bless and comfort us. We show our love for our Heavenly Father by remembering and renewing the sacred covenants that we have made with Him. Sister Barbara Thompson states that, "Keeping covenants is true joy and happiness. This is comfort and peace. This is protection from the evils of the world. Keeping our covenants will help us in times of trial." It is our prayer that as we partake of the sacrament and attend the temple, that we will committ ourselves more fully to the covenants that we have made. With all our love,The 8th Ward Relief Society

June Presidency Message

President Gordon B. Hinckley once said, “Thank the Lord for His goodness to you. Thank the Almighty for His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who has done for you what none other in all this world could do. Thank Him for His great example, for His tremendous teachings, for His outreaching hand to lift and help. Think about the meaning of His Atonement. Read about Him and read His words in the New Testament and in 3 Nephi in the Book of Mormon. Read them quietly to yourself and then ponder them. Pour out your heart to your Father in Heaven in gratitude for the gift of His Beloved Son.
Thank the Lord for His marvelous Church restored in this great season of history. Thank Him for all that it offers you. Thank Him for friends and loved ones, for parents and brothers and sisters, for family. Let a spirit of thanksgiving guide and bless your days and nights. Work at it. You will find it will yield wonderful results.”
We are all so blessed by our Heavenly Father. He has given us so much to be grateful for. If we strive to be sincerely thankful, we are promised that the Lord will help us recognize our blessings, and unlock the doors of heaven to help us feel God’s love. Sisters, we love and pray for you always.
Love,
The Relief Society Presidency
